Petitgrain takes its name from the French for ‘little grains’ — a reference to the tiny, unripe oranges from which the oil was originally distilled before the practice shifted to the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium var. amara). It is a close botanical relative of neroli, which is distilled from the flowers of the same tree, and bergamot, which comes from a different citrus variety. Petitgrain shares some of neroli’s fresh, floral character, but with a more woody, herbaceous, and slightly tart quality that makes it a sophisticated and versatile aromatic. This expression is steam-distilled from leaves and twigs sourced in Paraguay.
