Light two identical candles side by side — same wax, same fragrance load, same size — and change only the wick, and you'll get two genuinely different objects. Different sound. Different flame shape. Different melt pattern. Different amount of scent released into the room. The wick isn't a minor manufacturing detail tucked away at the centre of a candle; it's the single component that decides almost everything about how that candle actually behaves once it's lit. Most people never think about it until they've experienced both and noticed the difference — and once you have, it's hard to go back to whichever one you weren't using.

Here's what's actually going on with each, and which one wins depending on what you're burning a candle for in the first place.

What a Wick Is Actually Doing

A candle wick has one physical job: draw melted wax upward through capillary action so it can vaporise and burn at the flame. That's true whether it's cotton or wood, but the two materials go about it in structurally different ways, and that difference cascades into everything else.

A cotton wick is braided — several thin threads twisted together into a single flexible strand. That braiding is deliberate: as the wick burns, the braid curls the tip sideways into the outer edge of the flame, where it's hot enough to burn away cleanly. This is called self-trimming, and it's the reason most cotton-wick candles don't need constant maintenance. The trade-off is that a braided wick burns relatively hot and fast, and produces a taller, narrower flame that flickers more with any air movement in the room.

A wood wick is a single flat strip, usually a thin veneer of wood bonded in layers rather than a solid piece. It doesn't curl or self-trim the way cotton does, which is why it needs a proper trim before every burn — usually down to around 5mm — or it will eventually produce a larger flame than the wax pool can safely sustain. In exchange for that bit of extra maintenance, a wood wick burns at a noticeably lower, steadier temperature, produces a wider and calmer flame, and does something cotton simply can't: it crackles.

The Crackle Isn't a Gimmick

The sound a wood wick makes as it burns comes from genuine physics, not a manufactured effect. Wood contains natural moisture and resin pockets even after it's been dried and prepared for use as a wick, and as the flame moves along the wood's structure, those small pockets heat rapidly and release with an audible pop — the same basic mechanism, at a much smaller scale, behind the sound of logs crackling in a real fireplace. It's genuinely a byproduct of the material, not something added for effect.

That sound matters more than it might seem to on paper. A low, irregular crackle sits in the same broad category of sound that white-noise and ASMR research associates with a calming effect on the nervous system — consistent enough to be soothing, irregular enough not to become monotonous or grating. Cotton wicks are silent. If part of what you want from a candle is atmosphere rather than pure fragrance delivery, that's not a small difference — it's arguably the main reason to choose wood wick at all, and it's the one advantage cotton simply cannot replicate no matter how it's engineered.

Scent Throw: Where the Two Genuinely Diverge

Fragrance oil in a candle needs heat to vaporise and travel into the room — that's the "scent throw." Because a wood wick burns at a lower, wider flame with more surface area in contact with the melt pool, it tends to vaporise fragrance more evenly across a longer burn, which many people describe as a steadier, less front-loaded scent experience. Cotton wicks, with their taller, hotter, narrower flame, often produce a stronger initial burst of fragrance that can taper off more noticeably as the candle burns down, particularly in candles with a smaller wax surface area.

Neither pattern is objectively better — it depends what you want from the burn. A dinner party or a short evening session benefits from cotton's quicker, more immediate fragrance delivery. A candle meant to run in the background for hours — while working, reading, or simply having the room smell good over an extended period — tends to perform more consistently with a wood wick's steadier, lower-heat release.

Soot, Mushrooming, and the Maintenance Question

Cotton wicks have a well-known failure mode called mushrooming — a small carbon buildup that forms at the tip of the wick over a burn, especially if the wick isn't trimmed regularly. Left unchecked, this mushroomed tip can start producing visible soot, a thin black residue that settles on the inside of the glass and, in a badly maintained candle, can drift into the room itself. It's manageable with regular trimming, but it does require attention.

Wood wicks are considerably more forgiving here. Because they burn cooler and don't build the same carbon deposit at the tip, they produce meaningfully less soot over a comparable burn time, and the glass tends to stay cleaner for longer. The trade-off, again, is that initial trim before lighting — skip it, and a wood wick can develop an oversized flame that burns unevenly and does eventually produce its own soot, just from a different mechanism (too much wick exposed to too much oxygen, rather than carbon buildup).

Wood wicks, with their wider flame and larger contact area, are generally better at establishing a full melt pool on the very first burn, provided the candle is given enough time — usually at least an hour for a jar of any real size. Cotton wicks can also achieve a full melt pool, but the narrower flame sometimes needs a longer first burn, or occasionally a second wick placed off-centre in wider vessels, to avoid tunnelling.

For total burn time, the comparison is closer than people expect. A well-made wood wick candle and a well-made cotton wick candle of the same wax weight will generally burn for a broadly similar number of hours; the difference is less about how long the candle lasts and more about how evenly it burns down and how much of the wax actually gets used rather than wasted along the inside edge of the glass.

So Which One Actually Wins?

Genuinely, it depends what you're optimising for. If your priority is a stronger, more immediate fragrance hit — something for a specific occasion or a smaller space where you want the room to smell noticeably different within minutes — cotton wick still has a real advantage. If your priority is atmosphere, longevity of experience, a cleaner burn with less maintenance in the way of soot, and that specific fireplace-adjacent crackle that turns a candle from background fragrance into something closer to a small ritual, wood wick is very hard to argue against.

For a considered, everyday candle — the one that's lit while working, reading, or simply winding down a room at the end of the day — wood wick tends to be the better long-term choice, provided the small habit of trimming before each light actually gets built in. It's a candle that rewards a little bit of attention with a genuinely better experience in return.
